Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for maintaining the spirit of the historic July Mass Uprising and ensuring 'iron-clad national unity' to build a fascism-free Bangladesh. Speaking at a discussion titled 'Role of University Teachers in the Fall of the Fascist Government' at Dhaka University, Ahmed stressed the need for completing democratic reforms and avoiding provocative traps aimed at reviving fascism.
Historical Context and Call for Unity
The discussion, organized by the Dhaka University White Panel and the University Teachers' Association of Bangladesh, marked the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising. Ahmed highlighted that the victory achieved through years of democratic struggle should not be misused by any group. He called for reforms to limit the tenure of prime ministers and ensure checks and balances in the parliamentary system.
Addressing Students and Future Roadmap
Addressing students, Ahmed urged them to avoid provocative statements and protest through democratic means. He referred to alleged attempts to trap students and called for patience and tolerance. The Home Minister also discussed the need for bilateral relations with India based on mutual dignity and respect.
Tribute to Martyrs and Bilateral Relations
Family members of those killed during the July Uprising shared their experiences at the event. A special honour was presented to the families of the martyrs. Ahmed expressed hope that the Indian government would understand the matter and stop allowing convicted individuals to make anti-Bangladesh statements from Indian soil.
