Rajshahi University (RU) hosted a seminar on mental health and the 'Renu Smriti Trust Scholarship Award Ceremony' today. The event, organized by the Department of Philosophy, took place at the Momtazuddin Building. Professor Ariful Islam, Chairperson of the department, chaired the seminar. Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam attended as the chief guest, with Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Abdul Alim and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Mamunur Rashid present as special guests.

Expert Insights on Mental Health

Dr. Rakibuzzaman Chowdhury, a renowned psychiatrist and addiction specialist, spoke at the seminar as the resource person. He emphasized the importance of optimum treatment and necessary healthcare facilities for mentally ill individuals to help them return to normal life. Dr. Chowdhury highlighted that awareness about mental illness and acceptance of treatment are very low due to social stigma and superstition. He also noted that psychosocial care for mentally ill and disaster-affected people is a major challenge for the country's health and social welfare systems.

Addressing Quackery and Stigma

Dr. Chowdhury pointed out that some quacks and opportunist groups exploit patients for financial gain, pushing them into endangered conditions. Vice-Chancellor Professor Faridul Islam echoed these concerns, mentioning that mental health needs to be brought under a surveillance system incorporating other non-communicable diseases to combat these issues effectively.

Scholarship Awards

During the event, the 'Renu Smriti Trust Scholarship' was awarded to four students each from the 1st year of the Bachelor’s (Honors) program in the department. The Vice-Chancellor handed over cheques to the scholarship recipients, recognizing their academic achievements and potential.

Significance and Future Steps

The seminar and scholarship ceremony underscore the importance of mental health awareness and support within academic institutions. By addressing the challenges posed by social stigma, superstition, and quackery, RU aims to foster a healthier and more supportive environment for its students and the broader community. The event also highlights the need for continued efforts in mental health education and resource allocation.
