Finance and Planning Adviser to the Prime Minister, Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, announced that the government's main goal is to ensure equitable regional development. A special refinancing fund of Taka 3,000 crore has been allocated for the development of agriculture and agro-products in North Bengal, aiming to create an 'Agriculture Hub' in the region. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in transforming Bangladesh into a $1 trillion economy by 2034.
Government Initiatives and Investment Climate
Titumir spoke at the Rajshahi Regional Conference on Agro Processing, emphasizing that the government is not directly engaging in business but is creating an investment-friendly environment. He noted that various financial assistance and refinancing schemes worth about Taka 60,000 crore are in operation through the coordination of the government and Bangladesh Bank (BB).
Digitization and Infrastructure Development
To encourage investment, the interest rate has been kept between 5 and 9 percent, which, in the context of current inflation, can be considered a form of negative interest rate. The government is also digitizing the entire process from obtaining a license to setting up a factory, reducing bureaucratic complexities through a 'Single Window' service. Additionally, the railway line is being converted to dual gauge to ensure uninterrupted connectivity from Panchagarh to Chattogram or Mongla port.
Agricultural and Industrial Potential
Titumir highlighted the potential for new industries through the use of local resources such as potatoes and mangoes. He expressed hope that a major change in the investment climate will be visible by next December through policy continuity, equity in the tax structure, and the removal of bureaucratic complexities.
Why This Matters for Bangladesh
The development of an 'Agriculture Hub' in North Bengal is crucial for Bangladesh's economic growth. By focusing on agricultural and agro-processing sectors, the government aims to create a sustainable economic model that can support the nation's ambition to become a $1 trillion economy by 2034. This initiative not only promotes regional development but also enhances food security and creates employment opportunities, contributing to overall economic stability and growth.
