State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam today called for every parent to plant at least one tree after the birth of their child, emphasizing that trees are an inseparable part of human life. Speaking at the inauguration of a week-long tree plantation campaign and tree fair in Bagerhat, the State Minister highlighted the government's initiative to plant 250 million trees over the next five years. 'Every newborn should have at least one tree planted in their name,' he said.
Government's Tree Plantation Initiative
The State Minister announced that the government has undertaken an ambitious plan to plant 250 million trees over the next five years. This initiative aims to enhance environmental protection and biodiversity across the country. The campaign, themed 'Let's Beautify the Country Through Tree Plantation, Bangladesh First,' seeks to engage citizens in creating a greener and safer Bangladesh for future generations.
Community Involvement and Responsibility
Sheikh Faridul Islam stressed that protecting the environment is not solely the responsibility of the government but a moral duty of every citizen. He urged people to plant timber, fruit-bearing, and medicinal trees along roadsides, in educational institutions, and around their homes. The State Minister also highlighted the importance of waste management, warning against turning the country into a dumping ground.
Environmental Education for Children
Calling for greater environmental awareness among schoolchildren, the State Minister advocated for environmental education to begin at home and in schools. He encouraged children to develop the habit of planting trees from an early age, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.
Tree Fair and Community Engagement
The tree fair, which will remain open from July 11 to July 17, features exhibitions and sales of various species of saplings. Divisional Forest Officer of the Social Forestry Division Md. Shahin Kabir informed that the fair operates daily from 9am to 9pm. The inauguration ceremony was chaired by Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten, with several other dignitaries in attendance.
Significance and Future Steps
This initiative underscores the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation. By planting trees for every newborn, Bangladesh aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and ensure a sustainable future. The success of this campaign will depend on the active participation of citizens and the continued support of the government.
