The fires, which broke out on Saturday, forced thousands to evacuate as strong winds and extreme dryness exacerbated the situation. By Sunday, the fires had charred over 5,390 acres and were still zero percent contained.
Mayor Lisa Brown confirmed that hundreds of homes and structures were lost, with ongoing assessments for potential casualties. 'To the people who are suffering right now in our region from either loss or uncertainty... our hearts go out to you. We are here for you for the long term,' she said during a press briefing.
Despite improved weather conditions on Sunday, the fires continue to rage. Sheriff John Nowels reported no deaths or injuries so far, but the scale of the disaster means that the situation remains fluid. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, noting the state's fourth consecutive year of drought, a consequence of climate change.
Residents like Geoff Beadles and Tena Risley recounted harrowing experiences of evacuating their homes as flames approached. 'Just driving around looking at the homes -- it's just one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen in my life,' Beadles said. Risley described being stuck in traffic while trying to flee as fires blocked escape routes.
Emergency authorities have set up a shelter at the Spokane Convention Center for evacuees. The head of Washington's Department of Natural Resources, David Upthegrove, warned that Spokane's fire is one of 15 major fires currently burning across the state, highlighting an extraordinary wildfire season in the Pacific Northwest.
