The quake, initially reported at 6.6, was confirmed by the Colombian geological service and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to be 7.4 with an epicenter located 100 km underground in western Colombia.
Emergency services reported injuries and serious structural damage in cities such as Bogota, Pereira, Manizales, and the provincial capital of Quibdo in Choco province. Bogota's mayor reported limited damage to the capital, while six small airports in western Colombia suspended operations due to the quake.
