In a discussion on the recent parliamentary elections and referendum in Bangladesh, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi stressed the need for a mindset change among political parties to strengthen democracy. Rizvi made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion arranged by the human rights organization Odhikar at the SIRDAP Auditorium in Dhaka.
Rizvi stated that despite enacting laws to establish democracy, true progress is unattainable without altering people's mindsets. He emphasized the importance of fostering a mentality of abiding by the law among political leaders, their followers, and activists. Rizvi called for leaving behind past conflicts and starting a new journey of democracy.
He outlined several improvements necessary for a robust democratic system, including the effective functioning of democratic institutions, an independent judiciary, free media expression, and an impartial Election Commission. Rizvi noted that constructive criticism from the opposition is a normal part of democracy, but it should be aimed at mutual benefit and future progress.
Rizvi further suggested that political leaders should be cautious with their language to prevent violent attitudes among activists. He highlighted the need for judicial independence, urging judges to play a prudent role in delivering verdicts. Rizvi stressed that all state institutions must function independently to establish democracy and rule of law, while political parties should monitor their conduct and activities.
