A fisherman was killed and five others were injured in an unfortunate incident in Kurigram's Buridah River. The tragedy occurred when a collapsed electric pole caused live wires to fall into the river, leading to electrocution. The deceased has been identified as Md Rubel Mia, a 28-year-old resident of Haridashwar Taluk village. The injured fishermen were immediately taken to local hospitals for treatment, with some later transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Around noon, a group of local fishermen ventured into the Buridah River to catch fish. An unforeseen collapse of an electric pole near the riverbank led to live wires falling into the water. The fishermen, unaware of the danger, came into contact with the electrified water, resulting in severe electric shocks. Local residents quickly responded and managed to rescue the affected individuals, but unfortunately, Rubel Mia did not survive the incident.
The injured fishermen, Mozammel Haque, Abdur Rahman, Aminul Islam, Shakil Mia, and Anichur Mia, all from the same village, received initial medical care at local hospitals before some were transferred to a higher medical facility for specialized treatment. Rajarhat Police Station Sub-Inspector Atikur Rahman confirmed the incident and stated that further investigation and necessary legal actions would be undertaken.
This tragic event underscores the potential hazards faced by fishermen and the importance of safety measures near water bodies and electrical infrastructure. The incident highlights the need for better safety protocols to prevent such accidents in the future.
