In a strong stance against the spread of misinformation, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury declared that the government is unwavering in its commitment to ensuring the accuracy of official statistics. Speaking at a press conference following a three-day national conference in Dhaka, Chowdhury emphasized the necessity of precise data for effective public policy formulation.
The minister's remarks came in response to recent public concerns over the accuracy of the reported inflation figure of 8.32 percent for July. Chowdhury reassured that the government is dedicated to providing accurate information, stating, 'This government will not do anything that creates confusion over information. There is no scope for such misinformation under this government.'
Highlighting the government's efforts in data verification, Chowdhury mentioned that he had personally reviewed some of the data, including information showing a decline in rice and meat prices. He added that multiple reviews and meetings had taken place before releasing the latest inflation data, ensuring its correctness.
The importance of accurate statistics was reiterated by Chowdhury, who explained that they are crucial for the government to make informed policy decisions. The three-day conference, which concluded with discussions on Bangladesh's five-year strategic framework and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscored the need for reliable data in achieving national objectives.
State Minister for Planning Md. Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki announced future discussions with journalists to explain the methodology behind inflation measurement. 'You will be able to understand the government’s commitment to ensuring the reliability of information,' Saki said, indicating a transparent approach to data presentation.
