The Teesta River is flowing below the danger level at Dalia point in Nilphamari, showing an improving trend after fluctuations in water levels and a reduction in onrushing water from upstream. Officials from the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) report that the situation is unlikely to worsen as monsoon rains have notably lessened in the upstream northeastern Indian states.

Executive Engineer of the BWDB's Teesta Barrage Division Amitav Chowdhury stated that the Teesta was flowing 10cm below the danger level at Dalia point and 1cm below at Kawnia point in Rangpur at 6pm today. Earlier, some floodplains and low-lying areas in Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, and Rangpur districts were temporarily flooded as the river flowed above the danger level.

Md Ahsan Habib, Superintending Engineer of BWDB’s Rangpur Circle, noted that water levels of major rivers have risen and fallen following a reduction in monsoon rains both upstream and downstream. He assured that there is no possibility of major flooding in the Brahmaputra basin in the coming days and that the situation is being closely monitored.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB forecasts moderate to moderately heavy rainfall over the country and in the upstream Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and West Bengal during the next 72 hours. Despite this, the flood situation in low-lying areas adjacent to the Teesta in Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts is expected to improve within the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, district and upazila administrations, BWDB authorities, local monitoring committees, and public representatives are closely observing the developing situation in flood-prone areas. The improved water levels of the Teesta and other rivers bring some relief to the regions affected by recent flooding.
