A significant legal milestone was reached in Khulna as two individuals were sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in 2013. The verdict, delivered by Judge Muhammad Akram Hossain of the Khulna Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal, marks a pivotal moment in the fight against child abuse and violence in Bangladesh.
Background of the Crime
The victim, a seventh-grade student at the time, had gone to the house of one of the accused, Nazu Khan, to seek medicine for a foot injury she sustained while cutting her nails. The two accused, Hiru, son of Sultan, and Nazu Khan, son of Forman Khan, allegedly assaulted her after she left without receiving the medicine. The victim's mother, a jute mill worker, was away at work during the incident.
After the attack, the victim was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment. Her mother filed a rape case with Daulatpur Police Station four days later. The police submitted the charge sheet against the two accused on June 30, 2013. The case was later transferred to the Child Violence Suppression Tribunal, where it was disposed of after nine working days of trial proceedings.
Significance of the Verdict
The sentencing underscores the judiciary's commitment to addressing heinous crimes against children. The Khulna Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal, established to handle cases involving violence against children, has played a crucial role in ensuring justice for the victim. The life sentences and fines imposed on the convicts send a strong message against such acts of violence.
The case also highlights the importance of timely reporting and the role of law enforcement and the judiciary in providing justice. The swift action taken by the victim's mother in filing the case and the subsequent legal proceedings led to the conviction of the perpetrators. This verdict not only provides some closure to the victim and her family but also serves as a deterrent to others who might contemplate such crimes.
