In a region where grapes are commonly associated with foreign vineyards, Emdadul Haque Raja, a schoolteacher and agriculture enthusiast from Sundarganj upazila, has achieved significant success in grape cultivation. His vineyard, named 'Krishibid Angur Bagan,' has become a local attraction and a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs.
From Hobby to Success
What began as a hobby has now turned into a thriving venture. Raja's vineyard, located in Purba Bachhatide, features 50 grapevines of various varieties planted on just seven decimals of land. Despite the small space, his dedication and use of modern, environment-friendly farming techniques have yielded impressive results.
Varieties and Yield
Raja has planted 26 grape varieties, with the Russian varieties Baikonur, Green Long, Vallez, and Prestige already bearing fruit. Each vine is expected to produce around 10 to 15 kilograms of grapes, with this year's harvest estimated at 100 to 120 kilograms. He sells his grapes at Taka 300 per kilogram.
Community Impact
The vineyard, situated beside a road, attracts visitors who are amazed by the successful grape cultivation. Many locals, like A M Masud, have been inspired to consider planting grape saplings themselves. Raja's success has sparked interest in expanding grape cultivation in the region, potentially meeting local demand and supplying other parts of the country.

Raja plans to expand his commercial production by producing additional saplings. He is also willing to assist anyone interested in becoming a grape-growing entrepreneur, highlighting the potential for both household needs and additional income generation.
