A Dhaka court has placed two former employees of NJ Diamonds on a five-day remand each in a case filed over the alleged theft of diamond and gold jewellery by replacing the original ornaments with cheap replicas at the jewellery shop.
Court Remand Order
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah passed the order as police produced Munmun Acharya and Rifa Tamanna before the court. The police had initially sought a 10-day remand for both individuals. The court, however, granted a five-day remand for further investigation.
Case Details
According to the case statement, Munmun Acharya and Rifa Tamanna allegedly conspired with several unidentified accomplices to steal and misappropriate diamond jewellery while working at the establishment between April 27, 2024, and July 8, 2026. The complaint alleges that, following a premeditated plan, they systematically replaced genuine diamond ornaments with replicas and misappropriated the original jewellery. The case also accuses them of directly stealing several genuine diamond ornaments.
Alleged Stolen Items
Among the items allegedly stolen through the substitution scheme were four diamond-and-gold necklaces weighing 26.11 grams, 50.41 grams, 19.84 grams, and 31.43 grams, respectively.
Legal Action
Md Khayej Ahammad of NJ Diamonds filed the case with Banani Police Station on July 8, 2026. The case has significant implications for the jewellery industry in Bangladesh, highlighting the need for stringent security measures and employee vetting processes.
Significance and Next Steps
This case underscores the importance of maintaining high security standards in jewellery shops to prevent such thefts. The remand period will allow the police to gather more evidence and possibly identify other accomplices involved in the crime. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for handling similar incidents in the future.
