Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan today directed officials to take immediate measures to drain stagnant rainwater and mitigate waterlogging in different parts of the capital following heavy rainfall.
Inspection of Waterlogged Areas
After Jumma prayers, the administrator visited waterlogged areas along the Mirpur-10, Kazipara, and Shewrapara Metro Rail corridor to inspect the drainage system and the accumulation of rainwater on both sides of the roads.
Instructions to Cleaning Workers
During the visit, he instructed DNCC cleaning workers to take prompt action to ensure quick drainage of the stagnant water.
Urging Local Shopkeepers
The administrator urged local shopkeepers not to dump waste into drains, stating that indiscriminate disposal of garbage obstructs water flow and worsens waterlogging.
Visit to Kitchen Market in Mirpur-12
Later, he visited Kitchen Market in Mirpur-12, where he expressed dissatisfaction over the unhygienic condition of the market and the indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Meeting with Stakeholders
He immediately convened a meeting with shopkeepers, market committee members, and local representatives and directed them to resolve the problems without delay.
Ensuring Proper Cleanliness
The DNCC administrator also instructed the Regional Executive Officer of Zone-2 to take necessary measures to ensure proper cleanliness and waste management in the market.
Significance and Implications
Waterlogging is a recurrent issue in Dhaka, especially during the monsoon season. Effective drainage and waste management are critical to prevent flooding and ensure public health. The administrator's directives aim to address these challenges promptly, highlighting the importance of community cooperation and timely action by municipal authorities.
