An American Ebola patient has arrived in Germany for treatment, the health ministry in Berlin confirmed on Monday. This follows weeks after another US citizen infected with Ebola was treated in Berlin. The patient, a humanitarian worker, was transferred from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to Frankfurt's university hospital.
Patient Transfer and Treatment
The patient landed in Frankfurt overnight and was immediately transferred to the city's university hospital. The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed on X that the patient had been under clinical care and close monitoring in Bunia, the capital of the northeastern Ituri province of the DRC.
Ebola Outbreak in DRC
The DRC declared its 17th Ebola pandemic in mid-May, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there is no vaccine or cure. The WHO reports over 1,900 confirmed cases and more than 700 confirmed deaths in the current outbreak.
Safety and Expertise
The German health ministry assured that the US patient poses no danger to the general population or other patients in the Frankfurt hospital. US authorities requested Germany's help due to the country's expertise in treating Ebola cases and the shorter flight time from the DRC to Germany.
Previous Case in Berlin
Another US patient with Ebola was quarantined at the end of May along with his family at Berlin's Charite Hospital. He made a recovery after two weeks of treatment.
Why This Matters
The transfer of Ebola patients to Germany highlights the global response to the ongoing outbreak in the DRC. It underscores the importance of international cooperation in managing infectious diseases and the critical role of countries with specialized medical facilities in providing care for such cases.
