The death toll from a powerful earthquake in the southern Philippines has risen to 37. The 7.8 magnitude quake hit Mindanao Island, causing extensive damage and leaving 487 injured. Authorities fear the death toll may rise further as rescue efforts continue. The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, also caused structural collapses and disrupted power and communication systems. A tsunami warning was initially issued but later withdrawn.
Widespread Damage
The earthquake has resulted in the collapse of numerous buildings and damaged roads across Mindanao. Large areas of the island remain without electricity and telecommunications. The quake was felt as far as Manado in northern Indonesia, highlighting the region's vulnerability to seismic activity. Both the Philippines and Indonesia are located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly seismic zone.
Rescue Operations
Rescue teams are working to reach coastal towns and villages to assess the full extent of the damage. The Philippine government and international aid organizations are coordinating relief efforts to support those affected by the disaster.
