A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Japan on Thursday, causing minor damage but no reported casualties. The quake, which occurred at 7:30 am local time, was felt in Tokyo, several hundred miles away. The Japan Meteorological Agency initially reported a magnitude of 6.9 but later revised it to 7.2, with the epicenter at a depth of 44 kilometers off Iwate prefecture on Honshu island.

Minor Damage Reported

Although the quake caused saucepans to fall from kitchen cupboards and security cameras to wobble, no major damage or casualties have been reported. Mutsumi Shimohata, a resident in Hashikami, Aomori prefecture, reported that a picture frame fell in her home. Her company advised employees to stay home due to minor damage at the office.

No Tsunami Warning Issued

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. The Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that no abnormalities were reported at nuclear power stations in the region. Regular traffic was observed in Hachinohe city, with traffic lights functioning normally.

Government Response

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered ministries and government agencies to work closely with local authorities. She urged residents in affected areas to remain alert for possible aftershocks. Japan, located on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' experiences hundreds of earthquakes annually, though most are mild.

Historical Context

Japan is no stranger to powerful earthquakes. In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude undersea quake triggered a tsunami that killed or left missing around 18,500 people and caused significant damage to the Fukushima nuclear plant. More recently, a 7.7-magnitude tremor in April this year injured at least 10 people and prompted authorities to issue a special advisory warning of increased earthquake risk.
