At least 10 people were killed and several wounded in Houthi attacks on Yemen's Marib province, a strategic region rich in oil resources. The attacks come amid escalating tensions following the unraveling of a 2022 truce between the Iranian-backed Houthis and the Saudi-supported Yemeni government last month.

Escalating Conflict

The recent Houthi offensive has resulted in significant casualties. A Yemeni military source reported that eight members of government forces were killed and 12 wounded in the latest attacks. Additionally, the health minister for the Saudi-backed government confirmed that two civilians were killed and 14 wounded when rebels shelled residential areas and displacement camps in Marib city.

International Concerns

The UN special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict, warning that Yemen faces a greater risk of renewed large-scale conflict than at any point since the UN-brokered truce of April 2022. He called on both sides to show restraint and return to good faith negotiations.

Strategic Importance of Marib

Marib province holds significant strategic importance due to its oil resources. The province is split between the Houthis and the Yemeni government, with the government controlling Marib city and its oil fields. The Houthis have previously attempted to capture the region, but their efforts were largely halted by the 2022 truce.

Regional and Global Implications

The conflict in Yemen has broader regional and global implications, particularly amid the ongoing showdown between the United States and Iran. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have increasingly targeted Saudi interests, including a recent maritime blockade and attacks on Saudi tankers. The Saudi-led coalition, which has supported the Yemeni government since 2015, has warned that it will not stand idly by against Houthi attacks, particularly in Marib.
