The death toll from the devastating Bangkok bar fire has risen to 34 after a 20-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries. Apinya Sukthongsa, who was injured in the blaze at the Rong Beer Na Lad Phrao bar and restaurant on July 12, died in hospital on Sunday, according to the Erawan Emergency Medical Centre. Most of the victims died from smoke inhalation, with others succumbing to severe burn injuries.
Investigators are examining the cause of the fire and why it was so deadly, with many victims found near the toilets and questions raised about whether fire exits were obstructed. A building safety expert told AFP that the venue appeared to lack the safety systems required for its large crowds and live music events.
Around 70 people were injured in the fire, with 13 still in intensive care units. Thailand's approach to health and safety regulations in bars and nightclubs has long raised concerns, following a similar incident in 2009 where a blaze at Bangkok's Santika club killed 67 people.
