The Bangladeshi government is set to organize a national para sports competition of international standards, aiming to prepare and empower talented athletes with disabilities for global events. Announced by State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque, this initiative reflects a broader strategy to transform persons with disabilities into valuable national assets.
Addressing at the inauguration of the Asian Para Games training camp, Aminul Haque emphasized the government's long-term plan to support athletes with disabilities. He expressed hope that the Prime Minister would inaugurate the upcoming event. The minister highlighted the need to celebrate and support these athletes, who can represent Bangladesh on the world stage.
Financial support for para athletes is also being expanded. Currently, 300 athletes receive monthly stipends, a number set to increase to 500. Additionally, para athletes achieving notable success in international competitions will be included in the sports allowance program. The government aims to provide year-round training and modern facilities to ensure athletes are well-prepared.
To broaden participation, the government plans to expand talent identification programs to all 64 districts, organizing regular para sports competitions. A nationwide talent hunt under the banner of 'Notun Kuri Para Sports' will also be launched to discover and nurture promising athletes. Discussions are underway to develop the Mirpur Stadium area into a comprehensive sports hub, including a modern sports complex for athletes with disabilities.
This initiative marks a significant step for Bangladesh in supporting and recognizing the potential of athletes with disabilities, aiming to foster a culture of inclusion and pride in their achievements.
