Bangladesh is set to achieve a unique leadership position in global eye healthcare, according to State Minister for Health Dr MA Muhith. For the first time in the world, Bangladesh has agreed to work as a co-organizer of the upcoming 'Global Summit on Eye Health', which will showcase the country's health sector reforms on the world stage.

Why is Bangladesh's role significant?

Dr Muhith made the remarks in a meeting titled 'Special Roadmap for the Development of Eye Care Services to Prevent Blindness and Reduce Vision Loss in Bangladesh', held at the conference room of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. He emphasized that an integrated 'National Eye Care Plan' is being developed in coordination with the government, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and domestic and international agencies to ensure eye healthcare for every citizen, from urban to rural areas.

What are the key priorities in Bangladesh's eye care plan?

Dr Muhith outlined three urgent priorities in eye care. Firstly, over 10 lakh people in the country are suffering from blindness due to cataracts, and reaching them with prompt surgical services is a top priority. Secondly, millions of students in villages and towns are falling behind in their studies due to a lack of spectacles. Thirdly, the productivity of middle-aged working people is decreasing by about 25 to 30 percent, and ensuring free and easy access to spectacles for people of all ages is crucial.

How will Bangladesh showcase its reforms at the global summit?

As a co-organizer of the 'Global Summit on Eye Health', Bangladesh will have the opportunity to present its health sector reforms and initiatives on the world stage. This will highlight the country's commitment to improving eye healthcare and its potential to lead global efforts in this field.
