In Sherpur upazila of Bogura, local residents formed a human chain to protest against the pollution caused by Majumdar Foods. The protesters allege that the factory's boiler ash and contaminated water are severely affecting public health and agriculture in the area.
The protest took place on Friday afternoon near the factory in the Chonka Uttar area, with several hundred affected men and women participating. Speakers at the event claimed that the boiler ash from the factory is causing eye problems and making it difficult to raise livestock. They also stated that the contaminated water from the factory is harming crop production and increasing the prevalence of waterborne diseases like diarrhea.
Affected residents Hasan Ali, Shahadat Hossain, and Haidar Ali said, "The factory's ash is causing us medical issues, and the smell of the contaminated water is making normal life impossible. We demand immediate action." Local resident Mo. Humayun Kabir Mithu mentioned that written complaints have been submitted to the upazila administration and other departments, but no effective solutions have been found yet.
However, Majumdar Foods' engineer Khalid denied the allegations, stating that the factory's wastewater is discharged into the designated Fuljor River through a pipeline. He also mentioned that an advanced 'ash chamber' is used to control ash. Khalid added that the company would stand by the affected parties if specific complaints were received.
Sherpur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Mo. Saiduzzaman Himu said, "Considering the locals' complaints, an investigation team from the relevant ministry has already visited the area. Necessary actions will be taken according to the law once the investigation report is received."
