Several river ports in Bangladesh are on high alert as they have been advised to hoist cautionary signal number one. This comes amid forecasts of heavy rainfall and gusty winds affecting regions including Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar. The National Disaster Response Coordination Centre (NDRCC) issued the warning, anticipating rain and thundershowers with winds up to 60 kilometres per hour from the south/southeast.
Warning Issued for Coastal and Riverine Areas
The NDRCC's notification details that rain accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds may hit these areas, potentially causing disruptions. Furthermore, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions within the next 24 hours.
Rainfall Forecast and Potential Landslides
The alert mentions that 44-88 millimetres of rainfall, with some areas potentially seeing over 88 millimetres, could occur. The heavy rainfall raises the risk of landslides, particularly in the hilly regions of the Chattogram division.
