Bangladesh has enacted the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Act, 2026, aimed at combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling facilitated through digital platforms and technology. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized the law's role in upgrading the country's legal and institutional framework to international standards, keeping pace with evolving criminal tactics.
Enhanced Legal Framework
Speaking at the National Dissemination Meeting on the new law, held at Hotel InterContinental Dhaka, the minister highlighted the law's provisions. It distinguishes between human trafficking and migrant smuggling, strengthens investigation and prosecution, enhances victim and witness protection, expands international cooperation, and upholds the principle of non-punishment of victims.
Commitment to Combat Trafficking
The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to tackling human trafficking and migrant smuggling through a robust legal framework, effective institutional coordination, and a victim-centred criminal justice system. The event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Justice and Care Bangladesh, and attended by key stakeholders including foreign diplomats, law enforcement officials, and civil society representatives.
Participants at the meeting underscored the need for stronger inter-agency coordination and sustained national and international cooperation to ensure effective implementation of the law, dismantle organised criminal networks, and bring offenders to justice. Justice and Care Bangladesh Country Director Mohammad Tarikul Islam presented the background, rationale, and key provisions of the legislation.
