The Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested an illegal artisanal trawling vessel and confiscated trawling nets worth about TK 8.5 lakh and 2,100 kg of marine fish during an operation near the Sheikherkhil fish ghat in the Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram. During this operation, thirteen fishermen were taken into custody. The operation took place on Thursday, July 16. Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan, a media officer for the Coast Guard, provided this information in the afternoon.
The Coast Guard conducted a special operation in the vicinity of the Sheikherkhil fish ghat based on secret information. An illegal artisanal trawling boat was seized during the operation. Upon inspection, the boat was found to contain seven trawling nets worth around TK 8.5 lakh, along with 2,100 kg of marine fish, leading to the detention of thirteen fishermen, he added.
The Coast Guard said legal proceedings against the detained fishermen are underway. Sabbir Alam Sujan emphasized that the Coast Guard is actively engaged in regular operations to safeguard the nation's marine fishery resources. Such operations will continue in the future, he said.
Illegal trawling is a significant concern for marine ecosystems, as it often leads to overfishing and damage to the seabed. The seizure of the trawling nets and fish highlights the ongoing efforts by the Coast Guard to combat illegal fishing practices and protect marine biodiversity.
The operation in Chattogram is part of a broader initiative by the Coast Guard to enforce fishing regulations and ensure sustainable use of marine resources. The continuous efforts aim to deter illegal activities and promote responsible fishing practices among local fishermen.
