In a bid to tackle the escalating issue of online violence against women and girls, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has sought the backing of UN Women for Bangladesh's initiative to create a Global Platform to Address Digital Harassment against Women. Stressing the importance of international cooperation, Shama highlighted the need for collaborative efforts during a meeting with UN Women Country Representative in Bangladesh Gitanjali Singh.
Initiatives for Women's Empowerment
During the meeting, Shama outlined the Bangladeshi government's ongoing initiatives to empower women, including the expansion of educational opportunities for girls and the introduction of social programs like the Family Card and Farmer Card. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance the lives of women and girls in Bangladesh.
Climate Change and Rohingya Issues
Shama also underscored the need for sustained support from UN agencies in addressing the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women and girls. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of facilitating the early, safe, and voluntary repatriation of Rohingya refugees and ensuring justice for the human rights violations they have suffered.

Gitanjali Singh provided an update on UN Women's ongoing programs in Bangladesh aimed at advancing women's empowerment and gender equality. She expressed gratitude for the government's support in implementing these initiatives. The meeting also covered discussions on Bangladesh's preparations for the 71st Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, the national reports on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and the next National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security.
