Bangladesh has called on India to clarify its position regarding reports that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is set to deliver a virtual address from India on August 5. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam emphasized Dhaka's commitment to maintaining and strengthening its relationship with New Delhi, highlighting the importance of clear communication to prevent any potential damage to bilateral ties.
Shama Obaed Islam stated that Bangladesh expects India to make its position clear on the reported event. She noted that both countries share an interest in maintaining and enhancing their relationship, and any ambiguity could impact these efforts. "We are moving forward with India with a forward-looking approach. We don't want it to be damaged and I firmly believe that India doesn't want it either. So, India has to make clear whether it supports it or not," she told reporters.
The state minister clarified that the reported event is not being organized by the Indian government. She indicated that Bangladesh would assess the situation and determine if any diplomatic communication with New Delhi is necessary. "If we think it is necessary, the government will contact the relevant foreign ministry," she said.
Shama reiterated that Bangladesh had communicated to India, both verbally and in writing, that fugitives or convicted individuals should not be allowed to use Indian territory for political activities aimed at destabilizing Bangladesh. She stressed that while such activities could affect bilateral relations, Bangladesh is keen to avoid any negative impact.
On broader foreign policy, Shama Obaed Islam stated that Bangladesh would continue to pursue balanced and pragmatic relations with all partners, including India, China, and others, based on national interests. She also mentioned that no decision had yet been taken regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's proposed participation in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi in September.
