Venezuela has confirmed that the death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck last month has exceeded 5,000. Officials announced that the country has drawn $346 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to aid in reconstruction efforts. The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes, which occurred on June 24, devastated the coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas. National Assembly chief Jorge Rodriguez reported that 5,069 people were killed, with most casualties in the coastal region. The number of injured remains at 16,740, with most already discharged from hospitals. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez stated that the funds were drawn from Venezuela's reserve tranche at the IMF. The IMF's Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva confirmed the release, emphasizing the institution's support for urgent humanitarian needs. Approximately 20,000 people are now homeless, residing in overcrowded camps lacking proper sanitation and water supplies.

The earthquakes have left a significant impact on Venezuela, particularly in La Guaira, where infrastructure and homes were severely damaged. The coastal region, already vulnerable due to its location, faced compounded challenges from the natural disaster. The funds from the IMF are expected to play a crucial role in the country's recovery efforts, providing essential resources for rebuilding and supporting those affected.

The IMF and the World Bank resumed relations with Venezuela in April, following a period of frozen ties since 2019. This resumption came after the United States overthrew President Nicolas Maduro in January, leading to a shift in international recognition and support. Venezuela holds approximately $5.1 billion in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) at the IMF, which were previously inaccessible due to non-recognition of Maduro's presidency. The recent release of funds marks a significant step towards addressing the humanitarian crisis caused by the earthquakes.
