The United States has launched new airstrikes against Iran in response to attacks by Iranian forces that resulted in the deaths of two US servicemen and left another missing. This marks the first US military deaths since hostilities with Iran resumed on July 7.

US Response to Iranian Attacks

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the airstrikes began at 2200 GMT and are intended to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and punish the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for their attacks against American service members in Jordan.

Iranian Reaction and Background

Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim reported that the US attacks targeted Sirik, a port on the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran. The recent hostilities between the US and Iran have escalated tensions in the region, with both sides engaging in military actions.
