US President Donald Trump has criticized the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) decision to suspend Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) use of traffic stops after two fatal shootings. The DHS halted the practice following the shooting deaths of a Colombian man in Maine and a Mexican man in Texas. Trump urged ICE to continue using traffic stops, calling them an 'important and effective Crime Fighting tool.'

Recent Incidents and Backlash

The recent shootings have intensified the nationwide backlash against ICE's aggressive tactics. In Maine, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old delivery driver authorized to work in the United States, was killed. Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the incident as a'murder of a Latin American Colombian at the hands of the US government.' In Texas, Lorenzo Salgado, 52, was shot dead, with ICE claiming he attempted to run over an agent, a claim disputed by witnesses.

Trump's Stance and ICE's Response

Trump took to his Truth Social network to express his opposition to the suspension, stating that ceasing traffic stops would 'play right into the criminal's hands.' He emphasized that the practice would continue 'on my watch.' Tom Homan, Trump's border czar, confirmed a 'pause' in traffic stops but insisted the practice would resume, calling it effective.
