Nine members of a Cuban team of 12 canoeists defected during a visit to Canada for a competition, a source close to the matter told AFP on Thursday. The athletes were participating in the third Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Cup, which ran from July 9 until Thursday in Montreal. Cuban athletes have long taken advantage of their participation in international sporting events to defect from their communist-run island. In October 2021, the country's under-23 baseball team went to Mexico for a tournament, and only about half came home. Cuba is currently experiencing its worst economic crisis in decades, exacerbated by the fuel blockade imposed by US President Donald Trump in January. Frequent nationwide blackouts and shortages of medications, basic goods, and fuel have made life increasingly difficult for many Cubans. The defection of these athletes highlights the ongoing struggle within Cuba and the lengths to which individuals will go to seek a better life.

The athletes' decision to defect comes amid a backdrop of severe economic hardship in Cuba. The nation has been grappling with shortages of essential goods and frequent power outages, which have worsened due to the fuel blockade. These conditions have prompted many Cubans, including athletes, to seek opportunities abroad. The defection of athletes is not a new phenomenon; it has been occurring for decades, often during international competitions. This latest incident underscores the desperation felt by many Cubans and the appeal of a more stable life abroad.
