Police forcibly moved activist Sonam Wangchuk to a hospital on Saturday due to health concerns after a 20-day hunger strike in protest against India's examination system. Wangchuk, 59, began fasting on June 28 demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination irregularities.
The deputy commissioner of Delhi police stated that Wangchuk was moved to the hospital for essential medical care as per high court orders and expert medical advice due to his deteriorating health. A slight commotion ensued as protestors tried to obstruct the police. Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, confirmed she was with him at the hospital and emphasized that no medical intervention should be administered without consent from her, the family, and the doctors.
Wangchuk is known for pioneering water conservation projects in the Himalayas. His hunger strike gained support from students and opposition parties, while the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke announced an indefinite hunger strike in response to Wangchuk's hospitalization. The Delhi High Court ordered government doctors to monitor Wangchuk's health daily and authorized necessary medical intervention to save his life.
