Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon announced that the government has launched two projects to address the growing challenges posed by the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) and deepfake technology. This initiative is part of the country's transition from an analogue to a digital governance framework.

Responding to Rising Digital Threats

During a session in the Jatiya Sangsad, Minister Swapon highlighted the government's awareness of the increasing spread of AI-generated misinformation and deepfake content. He acknowledged that many people have already fallen victim to such technologies.

Prime Minister's Directives

The Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and relevant authorities to take necessary measures to address these emerging challenges. Swapon emphasized that the existing institutional framework was designed for an analogue environment, whereas the emerging threats are entirely digital in nature.

Project-Based Approach

Swapon explained that the government is undergoing a transformation process. The existing manpower structure alone is not sufficient to tackle these digital challenges. Following the Prime Minister's directives, the government has initially adopted a project-based approach to address these issues.

International Collaboration

Describing AI as a global challenge, the minister said countries around the world are working on innovative solutions. Bangladesh is also pursuing technology cooperation and knowledge-sharing with different nations. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting signed several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) during the Prime Minister's recent visit to China, with one key area of cooperation being the exchange of China's experience, knowledge, and technology in artificial intelligence.

Future Initiatives

Swapon said the government would gradually develop technology-driven digital solutions to effectively combat digital threats. Future initiatives will be strengthened through the agreements and broader international collaboration.
