The Election Commission (EC) is preparing to hold local government elections in phases from October, with Union Parishad (UP) and municipality polls likely to be conducted in the first phase. This initiative aims to maintain constitutional and legal continuity for local governance.

Preparations Underway

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud stated that the commission is targeting October for the commencement of these elections. He emphasized that the EC has already begun necessary preparations, including amending relevant laws, rules, and the electoral code of conduct.

Phased Approach

The EC plans to conduct the elections in phases, with Union Parishad and municipality elections likely to be held first. The formation of Upazila Parishads will depend on the completion of these initial elections. Following these, Upazila Parishad polls will be conducted.

Key Considerations

Several factors influence the election schedule, including public examinations, religious festivals, the monsoon season, and geographical and communication conditions across the country. The EC will finalize the schedule after reviewing these factors.

Security and Conduct

Security arrangements will involve deploying police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Ansar to maintain law and order. The EC aims to reduce violence and ensure peaceful voting, especially in areas with intense local rivalries.

Government Coordination

Although no formal discussions have taken place with the government, the EC is proceeding with preparations independently. Once formal communication begins, the EC expects to complete all preparations within one to one-and-a-half months.
