The Election Commission (EC) will take necessary action on Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, who was expelled from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami over allegations of moral misconduct, after receiving a reference from Parliament.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Mashud stated that the EC has not yet received any reference from Parliament regarding this matter. He emphasized that the Commission will only take action once the matter is officially referred by Parliament.
Abdur Rahmanel explained that the EC will examine the matter through an investigation and necessary hearing in accordance with the law once the reference is received. Until then, Gazi Nazrul Islam will continue to serve as an MP.
The commissioner noted that if Parliament follows the necessary procedure and refers the matter to the EC, the Commission will take action in accordance with the law. He also clarified that resigning as a lawmaker and resigning from a political party are two separate issues.
This development underscores the importance of parliamentary procedures in determining the fate of lawmakers expelled from their parties, highlighting the interplay between political and electoral processes in Bangladesh.
