On August 3, 2026, Varendra University in Rajshahi initiated a unique environmental program aimed at reducing plastic waste and promoting green initiatives. The program, titled 'Trees in Exchange for Plastic,' involved the distribution of tree saplings in exchange for used plastic materials collected from students, faculty, and staff. The initiative underscored the university's commitment to sustainability and the importance of collective action in combating environmental challenges.
The event, organized by the Department of Journalism, Communication and Media Studies, ran from 10am to 12pm at the university's Plaza premises. It featured the distribution of 300 tree saplings to the first 300 participants who submitted plastic waste. Additionally, about 30 trees were planted on campus. The program's main message, 'Small Change, Big Impact,' highlighted the potential of individual actions to foster a sustainable future.
