In a bid to promote transparency and impartiality, 254 Sub-Assistant Engineers (SAE) in Bangladesh's Public Works Department (PWD) were reassigned to different offices through a lottery system on August 3, 2026. The lottery was held at the PWD Bhaban conference room and covered SAEs from the country's eight administrative divisions. This follows a similar lottery held on July 30, 2026, which reassigned 767 SAEs (Civil).
The lottery results showed that 119 engineers were posted to Dhaka Division, 27 to Rajshahi, Chattogram, and Khulna divisions each, 13 to Barishal, eight to Sylhet, 11 to Mymensingh, and 22 to Rangpur. The process was coordinated by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Md Sarwar Alam, and witnessed by Additional Chief Engineer of PWD, Kazi Md. Firoz Hasan, among others.
Ashraful Haque, Additional Chief Engineer of the PWD, highlighted that the lottery system would help establish transparency, impartiality, and discipline in the department's transfer and posting process. The initiative was welcomed by Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Member Secretary of the Diploma Engineers Association (PWD Chapter), who believed it would restore discipline in the department's procedures.
The reassignment is part of an ongoing effort by the PWD to ensure that its personnel are distributed equitably across the country, which is crucial for maintaining efficient public works and infrastructure projects. The lottery system aims to eliminate favoritism and ensure that all SAEs have an equal opportunity to serve in different regions.
