At an event in Rangpur, officials and experts urged increased tree plantation to build a green Bangladesh and preserve the environment. They made the call at the inaugural ceremony of the divisional tree plantation campaign and tree fair-2026 held at the Rangpur Zilla School Ground. The District Administration and the Social Forestry Department jointly organized the event, where various nurseries, forest, and agriculture-based organizations displayed their 65 stalls. The fair will run from 10 am to 8 pm every day.
Divisional Director of the Local Government Division Md Abu Jafar inaugurated the fair by cutting a ribbon and releasing balloons as the chief guest. Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ruhul Amin presided over the programme. The chief guest highlighted that although about 25 percent of the country's total land area should be forested, that target has not been achieved. He noted that the number of trees has decreased significantly due to construction and developmental activities.
The present government has taken an initiative to plant 250 million trees to build a green Bangladesh through tree plantation. Md Abu Jafar urged everyone to participate in the tree plantation programme to make the government initiative a success. He emphasized the importance of tree fairs in increasing interest and awareness among people of different classes and professions, including students.
Md Abu Jafar stated, "Human life cannot be imagined without trees. Trees provide us with oxygen, keep the environment clean, and make a vital contribution to maintaining the climate balance. The rainy season is the most suitable time for tree plantation. More fruit, forest, and medicinal trees should be planted during this time. However, it is not enough to just plant trees, but their proper care and conservation should also be ensured. Only then will it be possible to get the real benefits of the tree plantation programme."
Rangpur-5 Constituency MP Professor Golam Rabbani, Rangpur Social Forest Division Divisional Forest Officer Md Nurul Islam, Police Superintendent Mohammad Mozammel Haque, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Police Commissioner (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty, and Rangpur Zilla School Headmaster Abul Kalam Azad also delivered speeches. Later, saplings were distributed among the students. Students, teachers, officials, nursery owners, and journalists from various educational institutions were present. The significance of this campaign lies in its potential to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for Bangladesh.
