The Cabinet has given final approval to a draft law that expands the authorities of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), empowering it to combat terrorism, human and drug trafficking, and rape. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired the 18th cabinet meeting at the Cabinet Division conference room in the Bangladesh Secretariat, where the draft Armed Police Battalion (APBn) Act 2026 was approved. The new law aims to replace an ordinance from 1979 and enhance the APBn's capabilities while ensuring its actions remain valid under existing laws.
The draft law, proposed by the Home Ministry, seeks to make the APBn more effective and people-friendly. It will allow the unit to investigate criminal offenses and conduct related proceedings in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and other prevailing laws. The law also includes provisions for establishing special and summary courts and procedures for conducting trials.
Under the new law, the APBn will continue to operate under the Police and be headed by an additional inspector general of police. The draft law is subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Law Ministry before it can be enacted.
