Spanish firefighters are facing a new and challenging front of wildfires near the coastal city of Valencia. At least 15,000 residents have been evacuated as authorities struggle to contain the spreading flames. The fires, exacerbated by heatwaves and strong winds, have already forced tens of thousands to flee their homes in other parts of Spain.

Intense Firefighting Efforts

The Valencia region, located on Spain's eastern coast, is particularly hard-hit. Juanfran Perez Llorca, the regional president, stated that the fire has a perimeter of approximately 21 kilometers (13 miles) and is beyond the current capacity to extinguish. The number of hectares burned remains uncertain. "We have evacuated around 15,000 people," he told reporters.

Widespread Evacuations and International Aid

In addition to Valencia, new evacuations have been ordered around Toledo, southwest of Madrid, due to complex fire conditions driven by wind gusts. Around 60,000 people have already been evacuated from areas around Madrid. International aid has arrived, with firefighting planes from Portugal, Italy, and other countries assisting Spanish teams on the ground. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized that the priority is saving lives, though one fatality has been reported from a separate fire in eastern Spain.
