Canada has imposed a temporary ban on importing cattle from Texas after the detection of a flesh-eating parasite known as New World screwworm in calves. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a notice stating that cattle and horses that have been in Texas within the last 21 days will not be allowed entry into Canada. Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster, calling the infestation an 'imminent threat.'

The US Department of Agriculture reported that this is the first detection of the parasite in Texas in 60 years. Two cases have been confirmed in calves in La Pryor and Zavala County. A 20-kilometer control zone has been established around the first incident site with strict monitoring and movement controls in place.

The screwworm is a parasitic fly that lays eggs in the wounds of warm-blooded animals, including humans. The larvae that hatch can burrow into living tissue, leading to severe injury or death if not treated promptly. The outbreak is part of a larger infestation occurring in Central America and Mexico, which US agricultural and health officials have been monitoring for some time.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency noted that the cold climate in Canada reduces the risk of the parasite becoming a major problem, as it thrives in warm, humid environments. However, farmers have been advised to remain vigilant, especially if they notice wounds on their cattle that exhibit swelling or foul odors.
