The upcoming World Cup will feature a total of 7.5 pairs of brothers, down from eight due to injuries. Four of these pairs will represent different nations, creating unique sibling rivalries on the global stage. Historically, brothers have faced off only twice in World Cup history, both times involving Jerome and Kevin-Prince Boateng in 2010 and 2014.
Brothers in the Same Team
Four pairs of brothers will play for the same teams: Theo and Lucas Hernandez for France, Jurrien and Quinten Timber for the Netherlands (though Jurrien is injured), and Leandro and Juninnio Bakuna for Curacao, and Laros and Deroy Duarte for Cape Verde.
Brothers in Different Teams
Four other pairs of brothers will represent different nations: Guela and Desire Due for Ivory Coast and France, Inaki and Nico Williams for Ghana and Spain, Derrick Lacasesen and Brian Brobbey for Ghana and the Netherlands, and Harry and John Souttar for Australia and Scotland.
While group stage matches won't feature brotherly showdowns, recent friendly matches have already seen such encounters. In a recent France vs. Ivory Coast friendly, Guela Due scored for Ivory Coast while his brother Desire watched from the stands. Post-match, Guela remarked on their pre-game banter but emphasized their familial bond.
