Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that the process of listing genuine martyrs and freedom fighters from the 1971 Liberation War was politicised by those responsible after the country gained independence. He emphasised that the list was not prepared impartially or accurately.

Critique of Past Efforts

Addressing the House, the Prime Minister noted that the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has formed a committee of experts to create a new, accurate list. He assured that efforts will be made to correctly identify genuine freedom fighters and true martyrs.

Government Initiatives

In response to a question about preparing an accurate list of the families of Liberation War martyrs and victims of genocide, the Prime Minister reiterated the government's commitment to this task. Initiatives include organising expert meetings, formulating a practical plan through stakeholder discussions, and implementing programmes based on that plan.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman highlighted the sacred responsibility his party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), feels towards the Liberation War, given its founding by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, a freedom fighter himself. He stressed the importance of depoliticising the list of genuine freedom fighters.
