The government is continuing its efforts under the existing extradition arrangement to bring back ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for trial, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said in Jatiya Sangsad (JS) today. He emphasized that if Sheikh Hasina returns, the verdict against her would be executed according to the law. The government is also working to bring the Bangladesh Awami League as a political party under the trial process.
Efforts to Ensure Justice
The Home Minister said the government has taken all necessary measures to ensure justice for the incidents of killings, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and crimes against humanity committed before the July Mass Uprising. Salahuddin Ahmed referred to the law minister's earlier statement, reiterating that Sheikh Hasina is a convicted fugitive who would be arrested immediately upon her return and the court's verdict would be enforced through due legal process.
Ongoing Trials and Investigations
Salahuddin Ahmed mentioned that the trial process against the Awami League as a political organization is progressing, with investigations continuing at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). He added that if necessary, the number of tribunals, prosecutors, investigators, and logistical support will be increased. The government's objective, he said, is not vengeance but ensuring justice. It is committed to completing the trials of all cases relating to those killed and injured during the July Mass Uprising.
Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman described Sheikh Hasina as a convicted person in the eyes of the law, with no scope to surrender under the existing legal framework. He said she would be arrested immediately upon entering Bangladesh. Investigations into 16 cases related to the July killings have been completed since the incumbent government assumed office. Of those, investigation reports in 12 cases have been submitted, while charges have been framed in four cases.
Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman urged the government to take more effective measures to ensure treatment, rehabilitation, and a dignified life for those martyred, injured, and permanently disabled during the July Mass Uprising. He called for the early inauguration of the July Memorial Museum and making the July Foundation more effective and vibrant. Chief Whip of the Opposition Nahid Islam stressed the need to recognize and preserve the contributions and sacrifices of women during the July Mass Uprising and called for strengthening the capacity of the International Crimes Tribunal.
