The Laborers' Association has demanded compensation for the families of 15 laborers and workers who were killed when a truck overturned in Tangail. This demand was made during a protest rally held in front of the National Press Club on Tuesday afternoon. The rally was presided over by the organization's president, Dr. Fazlur Rahman. Speakers included former general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Ruhin Hossain (Prince), executive president of the Laborers' Association, Anwar Hossain, general secretary, Arnab Sarkar, joint general secretary, Kallol Banik, and executive committee member, Motaleb Hossain. Solidarity was expressed by Murshikul Islam, organizational secretary of the Trade Union Center Dhaka Metropolitan, and Abdul Kuddus, president of the Rickshaw Van Easybike Workers' Union, among other organization leaders. Ruhin Hossain stated that 15 laborers and workers died in the truck accident, but there has been no word from the government regarding compensation or rehabilitation for these families. He noted that poor and helpless people come to the capital and other major cities in search of work. He added that these workers travel at low cost in overloaded trucks out of concern for how their earnings will reach their families. He argued that if the government had made special arrangements, these workers would not have had to risk their lives to travel home. Describing these deaths in road accidents as a structural genocide, CPB leader Ruhin Hossain called for effective measures to ensure everyone's safe travel. Dr. Fazlur Rahman said that the families of the 15 laborers who died yesterday must be provided with adequate compensation and rehabilitation. He also demanded that the government ensure medical treatment for the injured. CPB leaders called for real action, not just words from ministers, to stop the procession of deaths on the roads.
