Dr. Zubaida Rahman, Vice-Chairperson of Ziaur Rahman Foundation and the Prime Minister's spouse, has called for transforming Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) into a new hub of innovation, international collaboration, excellence in research, and compassionate leadership. Speaking at a views exchange meeting titled 'DMCians' Thoughts on the Modernisation of Bangladesh's Healthcare System', organized at the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) auditorium on the occasion of the college's 81st founding anniversary, she emphasized the importance of humanity in medical practice. Dr. Rahman highlighted that despite technological advancements, the core of medical science remains human-centered.
A Call for Compassion and Excellence
Dr. Rahman recalled her experiences as a physician, noting that often, a few reassuring words from a doctor can work like medicine for a patient. She stressed the need for DMCH to become a 'centre of excellence and compassion for patients,' where every patient receives the highest standard of treatment and empathy. She expressed her hope of seeing Dhaka Medical College become one of South Asia's leading centers for medical education, research, and innovation over the next 20 to 25 years.
Unity and Responsibility
Dr. Rahman emphasized the importance of unity among the DMC community, stating, 'Today, we are spread across different parts of the world. Our fields of work may be different, but the roots of our identity are the same—Dhaka Medical College. The time has now come for us to be united not only by the bond of memories but also by the bond of responsibility.' She further noted that the true strength of an institution lies not in its infrastructure but in its people, values, and talent.
Humanity in Medical Practice
Highlighting the human aspect of medical practice, Dr. Rahman urged physicians to maintain mutual cooperation despite professional competition. She noted that behind every success in medical science, there is a person, a family, and a life. Her call for compassionate leadership at DMCH underscores the importance of empathy and human connection in healthcare.
Significance for Bangladesh's Healthcare System
Dr. Rahman's vision for DMCH as a center of excellence and compassion is significant for Bangladesh's healthcare system. By fostering a culture of innovation, international collaboration, and compassionate leadership, DMCH can set a new standard for medical education and patient care in the region. This transformation could lead to improved healthcare outcomes and a stronger healthcare system overall.
