Sam Neill, the iconic actor best known for his role in 'Jurassic Park', reportedly battled pneumonia before his sudden and unexpected death at the age of 78. This revelation came from New Zealand actor Rima Te Wiata, who co-starred with Neill in the acclaimed comedy 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople'. Neill's family announced his passing in Australia, describing it as 'sudden and unexpected'. Although Neill had been treated for lymphoma in recent years and was declared cancer-free earlier this year, the exact cause of his death remains undisclosed.
Te Wiata shared her thoughts with the New Zealand Herald, expressing that Neill, who was not afraid of dying, would likely be 'annoyed' by his final illness. 'It really sucks, actually,' she said. 'I think he would be like: "For goodness sake, I got over my cancer. And now look, now I get pneumonia. What next?"' Te Wiata did not provide further details on the timeline of Neill's pneumonia.
Neill had previously revealed in a 2023 memoir that he was 'possibly dying' from stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, he announced earlier this year that he was cancer-free, thanks to a genetic therapy that modified his immune system. Hollywood luminaries, including director Steven Spielberg and co-stars Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, paid tribute to Neill, remembering him as a kind, funny, and gentle person, as well as a fine actor.
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand as a child and began his acting career in the early 1970s. His breakthrough role came in 1993 with 'Jurassic Park', where he played Dr. Alan Grant. Beyond acting, Neill was also known for running vineyards in New Zealand's Central Otago region. His unexpected death has left a significant void in the entertainment industry.
