Rosatom, Russia's state atomic energy corporation, is conducting its international scientific and educational program 'Icebreaker of Knowledge' contest. Students aged 14 to 16 from 22 countries, including Bangladesh, can apply. One winner from each participating country will be selected to join a nuclear icebreaker ship expedition to the North Pole in August 2026. The nearly 10-day expedition will involve scientific and educational activities in the Arctic region.
Over 400 students from around the world have participated in the Arctic expedition through this program in the past six editions. The contest will be held in three stages. In the first stage, participants must register online and complete a 30-question science quiz. In the second stage, participants will attend webinars on nuclear technology, Arctic research, safe navigation, and scientific innovation, followed by assignments and evaluations. In the final stage, the top 10 finalists from each country will submit a one-minute video presentation on a specified topic.
Applications are being accepted until June 3, 2026. Winners will be announced in June. The program aims to increase students' interest in science and nuclear technology, identify talented students, and provide initial career guidance. In the 2025 edition, a record 841 students from Bangladesh applied, with Abdullah Al Mahmud being selected for the North Pole expedition.
