International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has praised Argentina's improved economic standing since ultraliberal President Javier Milei took power in 2023. During a visit to Buenos Aires, Georgieva highlighted the nation's 'much sounder picture' and attributed this progress to the government's hard work and the sacrifices of the Argentine people. The IMF has repeatedly expressed support for Milei's administration, which has implemented austerity measures to revive the economy.
Economic Measures and Challenges
Milei campaigned on a promise to rejuvenate the economy through reduced public spending and inflation control. Despite the unpopularity of these austerity measures, which have led to frequent protests, Georgieva acknowledged the government's efforts. Argentina's inflation has shown a downward trend over the past three months, though it remains high at 33.5 percent year-on-year. Economic growth, however, has been sluggish at 0.2 percent year-on-year, well below the IMF's forecast of 3.5 percent for 2026.
IMF's Continued Support and Future Prospects
Georgieva's visit, which included meetings with President Milei, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, and other officials, underscores the IMF's ongoing support for Argentina. The IMF approved a $1 billion tranche in May under a $20 billion extended fund facility agreement. Looking ahead, the IMF forecasts Argentina's growth to rise to four percent in 2027. However, the economy faces challenges such as anemic consumer activity and skyrocketing debt defaults, with mortgage defaults reaching a 20-year high of 12.8 percent.
Protests and Political Context
Georgieva's visit was met with protests in Buenos Aires, where demonstrators expressed opposition to foreign debt payments and the IMF's involvement in Argentina. Banners reading 'no to paying foreign debt' and 'English out of the Malvinas, IMF out of Argentina' were displayed. After Argentina, Georgieva is expected to visit Uruguay to meet with President Yamandu Orsi.
