Train services on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route have been suspended as the rail tracks between Janalihat and Sholoshahar stations have been submerged under about two feet of water due to continuous heavy rains. Bangladesh Railway announced the suspension, citing adverse weather conditions.
Situation Overview
The Parjatak Express train, which departed from Dhaka on Tuesday, was unable to travel from Chattogram to Cox's Bazar and had to return to Dhaka on Wednesday. Similarly, the Cox's Bazar Express, which left Dhaka for Cox's Bazar on Wednesday, has been stuck at Chattogram Railway Station since early morning.
Passenger Impact
Officials at Bangladesh Railway stated that it will not be possible to resume services to Cox's Bazar until the water recedes from the railway lines in the Janalihat-Sholoshahor section. For the convenience of stranded passengers, Bangladesh Railway has announced that passengers can get a refund of their ticket money from the counter at Chattogram Railway Station.
Alternative Arrangements
Passengers who wish to return to Dhaka can do so by taking the Cox's Bazar Express from Chattogram at 4 pm on Wednesday. Those who had tickets for the previous day can also travel on this train using the same tickets.
Official Statement
Bangladesh Railway has expressed its sincere regret for the suffering of passengers due to this unexpected situation caused by the sudden natural disaster. The railway authority is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Why This Matters
The suspension of train services on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar route significantly impacts passenger travel, especially for those relying on rail transport to reach Cox's Bazar, a popular tourist destination. The incident highlights the vulnerability of infrastructure to extreme weather conditions and the need for robust disaster management plans.
